Dhampus and Poonhill trek is one of the exciting trekking routes that are popular among tourists looking for short hikes and yet consisting lots of enjoyable views and adventure experience. Dhampus 1770m, located around 23 km away from Pohara, is a small village populated by Gurung communities. Dhampus also acts as the traditional gateway to several exciting trekking destinations such as Annapurna Circuit, Annapurna Base camp, Annapurna Sanctuary, Jomsom, Mustang, Machhapuchhre base Camp, Ghandruk, Ghorepani and Poon hill etc. Dhampus trekking last as short as 2 days, so you can throw in some ascend to Ghorepani and hike to Poon Hill to extend some adventurous feeling which adds some 2 more days.
Poonhill trek is a short and relatively easy trek into the Annapurna region. This trek is suitable for those who do not have much time to spend and old people with a burning desire to observe the beauty of snow-capped mountains.
The trek is moderately tough as you will have to hike through many stone paved spiral stairs that may seem like never-ending. It begins with a drive down to Phedi (45 min) on the road leading to Baglung. Here onwards, the trail winds its way uphill through scenic terraced fields, forests, and picturesque little villages.
Dhampus is located on the crest of a hill and is surrounded by lush woods and acres and acres of fields swaying with millet and corn. The rice terraces on the hillsides add to the charm. It’s as good a representation of Nepal’s lovely mountain villages as any you will find in the country. The highlight of the village is, however, something far greater—the splendid views of the Annapurna range (Annapurna I: 8,091 m; Annapurna II: 7,937 m; Annapurna IV: 7,525 m); and Dhaulagiri (7th highest peak in the world at 8,167 m) and Manaslu (8th highest at 8,156 m). You might think that just being able to see these magnificent mountains is a blessing. However, there’s more. You’ll also be able to see Hiunchuli (6, 441 m), Lamjung Himal (6,586 m), Macchapucchre (6,993 m), and Ganesh Himal (7,446 m).
