This small Himalayan nation is home to one third of the Great Himalaya Trails, an extensive trail system that covers the country from Humla and Darchula in the west to Kanchenjunga in the east. The extent of diversity found in trekking in Nepal cannot be found in any other region of the world. To give you an idea of its geographical diversity, the lowest point (59 m) and highest point (8,848 m) are just 200 km apart in a straight line.
Trekking in Nepal can be organized in different ways in relation with the nature of the trek. Nepal proudly boasts of a great number of trekking regions and trekking routes that are suitable for trekkers. While determining the type of trekking, several factors come into play. For instance, the region, trekking route, duration, and time of the year determine the trekking style. Here we have discussed two most common types of trekking styles in Nepal.
Most trekkers visiting Nepal come in via the Tribhuwan International Airport in Kathmandu, where they acquire all their permits and other documentation, either from the appropriate offices or a trekking agent.
Tea House Trekking
Tea house trekking is the most popular form of trekking in Nepal, which allows trekkers to stay at local lodges and have wholesome food and comfortable rooms. Operated in beautiful and traditional wood and stone houses, tea houses are mostly available in popular trekking routes like Annapurna, Everest, and Langtang region.
Throughout the trek journey, you will stay the night in a tea house at various places. After a long, hard day of trekking, the feeling of getting some warm food, a hot bath, and a cozy bed is pretty awesome. All of these hotels are squeaky clean, the food is hygienic, and you will even get facilities like solar-powered 24-hour electricity and WI-FI.
An advantage of tea house trekking is that by arranging the accommodation and food locally through your guide, you can make your own schedule and hike carefree. Also, since these kinds of tea houses are run by the native inhabitants of the respective place, you will be able to experience their culture firsthand by living in their home, tasting their cuisine, and interacting with them.
Camping Trekking
Camping trekking is yet another popular trekking style in Nepal, which is fully supported through coordination between team members and necessary logistics. Complete equipment like tents, sleeping mats, kitchen equipment, and food, that have been provided by the trekking company have to be taken along with you with help of the porters throughout the journey. This nature of camping is generally undertaken when you have to trek in high elevations, where are no settlements. Thorang La Pass trek and Everest Three Passes trek are two such examples.
Naturally, along with the trekkers, there will also be a guide, a cook, camping staffs, kitchen team, and porters that will accompany you. After a tiresome day of trekking, the experienced members from the team will fix campsites at best possible places, prepare foods, and light a campfire. In the morning, after breakfast, the tents will be packed to opened at a new destination during nighttime once again.
An advantage of camping trekking is that it offers true and genuine trekking experience. While it may be tedious at times and require a lot of hard work, the feeling of gratification that you will feel after laying down on your sleeping bag is unmatchable.
